How to Make the Most of Your Home Pilates Practice: 10 Easy Upgrades
If you’re a Pilates beginner or are a fully fledged Pilates pro there are so many benefits to an at home practice. It gives you the freedom to move on your own schedule, without needing a fancy setup or studio space.
Why practice Pilates at home?
You get to show up in your comfiest clothes, move at your own pace, and still get an effective, connected workout. The upsides are endless: no commute, travel expenses, high studio class fees or pressure. Just you, your mat, and a little space to move and breathe.
But if you’ve ever struggled with motivation, you’re not alone. That’s where live Zoom Pilates classes come in. The accountability of a real-time class gives you the structure of a studio, while keeping it all wonderfully simple.
Here are 10 easy ways to get the most from your at-home practice. No fancy lighting or equipment needed:
Create a Ritual Around It
Clear some space to roll out your mat, fill up your water bottle and and have anything you might need to hand (head cushion, an extra layer, socks and equipment). Something as simple as, turning off the overhead light and switching to lamp can help to put you in the right mindset.
Block It Out Like a Meeting
Just like you would with any other appointment treat your class like a non-negotiable event in your calendar — because it is!
Keep Your Space Clear(ish)
No need for a Pinterest-worthy home gym — let’s be real, we need multifunctional spaces that work for us, in our unique homes. I transform my living room each time I teach into a mini studio with a room divider. All you need is enough room to move freely and safely.
Use the Replay
Can’t make it live? Catch the replay within 7 days, great for busy weeks. And the best part is, even if you attended live you can still go back to them again and replay within that week. It’ll allow you to focus less on the screen and more on your mindful movement.
Choose The Right Class For You
Choose a class that feels an appropriate level and pace for you that day. I always encourage you to listen to your body.
Position Your Device
Place your device where you can comfortably see it, preferably on the long side of your mat. Having it higher up on a table or shelf helps visibility so that you can see the screen from a variety of positions. Have Zoom installed on your device before the class starts and make sure to turn up the volume on your device so that you can hear the audio.
Turn off other distractions
If this is available to you this will help you stay focused as you won’t see notifications popping up on screen.
Use the Space to Ask, Reflect, and Refine
Each class is capped at just 12 people in each class, there's space to ask questions, check in on form, or explore how an exercise should feel in your body. You don’t need to know all the terminology — curiosity is welcome.
Let Your Practice Meet You Where You Are
Some days you’ll feel strong, other days you’ll just want to stretch and breathe — both are valid. Showing up as you are is where the real transformation happens.
Connect With the Community
You're not just moving alone — you'll be part of a welcoming and friendly online community all doing Pilates at home from their own corners of the world. Feel free to ask questions and chat with others.
